I will always cherish the years spent getting to know Thomas as both a brilliantly sharp colleague and a dear friend who can always make me laugh.

Although the former Webex content design and UX writing team never had an official manager, Thomas was our de facto leader. He took it upon himself to always unify us through weekly meetings, kickstarted valuable documentation work, and met with higher-ups to always champion for industry content design standards beyond just copywriting and editing.

One highlight I’ll look back on fondly is how, back in the summer of 2022, we kicked around the idea of using gen AI. We needed a way to scale the enormous deluge of flow reviews that overwhelmed and overworked our tiny team. Thomas taught himself how gen AI works to build Write Like Webex, a Chat GBT-based tool trained in Webex’s documented voice and tone, editorial standards, and content patterns.

This is a testament of how admirably forward-looking and innovative he is, fearless of experimentation and embracing new technology. What seemed like an insane and potentially career-ending idea back then — gen AI for designers to produce better quality first drafts — is now industry standard. He used this knowledge to help develop the persona for Cisco AI Assistant as well as the AI conversation design standards. In turn, this helped me build the AI Assistant for my product, Control Hub.

Thomas was the real heart and soul of the content team, always encouraging and uplifting us especially through bleak days and even bleaker days when our strong but scrappy team dwindled from five to just three. The amount of care and detail he brings to digital product experiences goes beyond content. I’ll miss working and learning from him, and it’ll be a lucky day for anyone to have this radiant designer on their team.

I had the privilege of working with Thomas Murphy for over four years on the Momentum Design System. I can confidently say he's one of those rare designers who fundamentally elevates the work around him.

As a Content Designer, Thomas sought to change how our org approached content (https://thomasmurphy.xyz/work/2025/8/24/all-we-saw-was-a-sea-of-errors). He provided essential guidelines for both Momentum and the Webex App. He singlehandedly designed and built “Write Like Webex”,(https://thomasmurphy.xyz/work/the-ridiculously-long-road-to-a-living-content-system) a tool for generating approved product content that became indispensable to our team. He also became our go-to subject matter expert on AI design patterns and authored nearly all of our guidance on the Cisco AI Assistant (https://thomasmurphy.xyz/work/giving-aiassistant-some-character).

    What
sets Thomas apart is his approach. He's relentlessly curious, constantly asking "why" and breaking concepts down to their essential particles before building them back up into something better. This isn't just a methodology for him, it’s part of his identity. Every collaboration with Thomas pushed our work to be more intuitive, more useful, and more intentional.

Beyond his technical expertise, Thomas helped establish a critique-driven, collaborative design culture within our organization. He creates an environment where ideas are challenged constructively and work gets better through discourse.

Designers like Thomas are rare. They don't just do excellent work—they raise the standard for everyone around them. Any team would be fortunate to have him.

I had the pleasure of working alongside Thomas as a Content Designer at Cisco Webex for six years, and throughout that time he brought a level of clarity and direction that made a meaningful difference to our work. He always approaches problems with a strategic, considered mindset, and that perspective helped the team stay aligned and focused even as our product responsibilities expanded and evolved.

He was instrumental in strengthening our content guidelines and ensuring they adapted as we took on additional apps and surfaces. He helped lead the effort to bring AI into our design practice. The “Write Like Webex” tool he built, a ChatGPT extension grounded in our content standards, quickly became a valuable resource that helped the broader design team write with more ease and consistency.

He also developed a practical plan for how content design could scale to support a wider set of teams and products, while enabling content designers to take on more strategic roles within the design process. His ability to look ahead, anticipate what the discipline would need, and articulate a clear framework had a real impact on how we approached our work.

Thomas brings insight, initiative, and a strong sense of craft to everything he takes on. Any team would benefit from his ability to elevate practices and move meaningful work forward.

I had the chance to worked with Thomas on multiple projects during our time together at Webex. Two recent ones were building the Cisco AI Assistant character prompt and AI-powered search in Control Hub.

He understood both how LLMs behave and how users think, turning vague product ideas into clear, testable interactions. And when he didn't, he'd ask questions and research what he didn't know.

He always wanted to make AI actually work within the constraints of the systems and experiences.

What makes Thomas different is that he enjoys thinking through how AI systems actually work on the backend, so the interactions on the frontend can scale effectively. It is something rare for a designer.

I've had the opportunity to work with Thomas on several projects over the last four years. During that time I have seen Thomas navigate the complex org structure of Cisco with ease, consistently finding ways to bring people together to solve problems. He is an advocate for the power of content to shape customer experiences and solve complex user problems.

Thomas is also deeply passionate about emerging technology. His knowledge and perspective around AI helped shape the companies guidance and perspective. He was the first person I met who built their own content design agent to assist his team. His passion and knowledge goes beyond a passing interest and delivers tangible improvements for customers and ROI for businesses.

Thomas is a tremendous content designer and AI pioneer that I am glad I had the opportunity to work with.

I have been incredibly lucky to be able to work with Thomas, as he spearheaded the content branding and design for the entire Webex app, and supported over 6 design teams with detailed design reviews and large-scale content revamp efforts across the product.

Thomas is an exceptional collaborator with fantastic communication skills - he is always warm, friendly, and readily available to dive into design and content discussions. With the content design team, he built the content branding for the Webex app from the ground up, creating comprehensive and clear guidelines and documentation for our design teams to reference. He also led fun and engaging workshops to educate designers on Webex’s content brand, processes, and tools. These sessions were very well-received and had a huge positive impact across our organization. Throughout his content reviews, Thomas also consistently backs his recommendations with thorough research, domain expertise, and clear, well-articulated rationale that really helps align stakeholders and drive projects forward.

Aside from his deep expertise in content and communications, Thomas also has a strong core design intuition that consistently shines through during design reviews. He is always thinking about providing the best possible user experience, and will readily brainstorm, discuss, and mockup ideas for improving designs beyond the content.

I speak for myself and many others when I say Thomas’s insights and input are highly trusted and valued by designers across our teams. The voice and experiences of our app would not be where it is today without him. I have always been consistently impressed and appreciative whenever I have the opportunity to work with him, and I genuinely believe his skills and impact would be a huge asset to any team he joins.text goes here

Way back when ChatGPT was released, Thomas showed peers like me at Cisco what was possible for content design with AI. I’ve watched him, awestruck, as he has deepened and expanded his expertise ever since.

He’s also an absolute delight to work with—super sharp, witty, brimming with ideas, and always open to new ones. For any team looking for content experts to strengthen a vision and deliver on objectives for AI, I couldn't recommend Thomas more highly.
